Thirty-two new students have begun their studies under the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship (AAPS), marking the start of an exciting educational journey at Fiji National University (FNU).
The 2026 cohort includes 18 women and 14 men who started their studies in February at the Fiji National University (FNU). Among them, 16 scholars are pursuing health-related postgraduate diploma programs, while 16 scholars are undertaking Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) studies, including 12 Diploma and 4 Certificate IV programs.
The scholars recently gathered for a pre-departure briefing in Suva to help them prepare for their studies and understand what to expect during their academic journey.
Supporting education and partnerships
Speaking at the briefing, Acting Counsellor for Economic and Development Cooperation at the Australian High Commission Fiji, Ms Emily Wilson, congratulated the scholars on their achievement.
She said the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship reflects Australia’s long‑term commitment to building skills, supporting education, and strengthening partnerships across Fiji and the Pacific.
“Australia is committed to building a strong Pacific vuvale,” Ms Wilson said. “By investing in education and skills in Fiji, we are supporting young people who have the potential to contribute to the country’s development.”
Ms Wilson noted that the scholars were selected from a highly competitive group of applicants, recognising both their academic ability and leadership potential.
Preparing for success
The briefing provided practical guidance on managing study commitments, adjusting to academic life, and building support networks. Scholars also heard from Australia Awards alumni, who shared their experiences and advice on strategies for overcoming challenges.
Participants were encouraged to actively engage, ask questions, and connect with each other. After completing their studies, scholars will join the Fiji Australia Awards Alumni Network, becoming part of a growing group of graduates contributing to national and regional development.
Inspiring future leaders
Among the new cohort is Amelia Keli Vakalala, who is studying a Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) at FNU.
“I chose Mechanical Engineering because I am interested in learning about engines and mechanics, and I believe this will give me a head start toward my dream career,” she said.
Receiving the scholarship has been both exciting and humbling for Amelia.
“I’m very grateful and happy. This scholarship has opened an opportunity for me,” she said.
As a woman studying in a traditionally male-dominated field, Amelia hopes to inspire other young women to follow their interests.
“My advice to other women is to be open-minded,” she said. “Don’t think about whether something is for men or women. If you put your mind to something, you can achieve it.”
Through the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship, Australia continues to support the development of skilled professionals who will contribute to Fiji’s future and strengthen partnerships across the Pacific region.
