On Saturday, 21 June, the newly appointed Australia Awards Fiji Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) gathered at Uprising Beach Resort for a dynamic Planning Day. Eleven of the twelve AAB members, including one joining virtually, participated in the full-day session aimed at setting priorities, building relationships, and aligning on the Board’s strategic role.
With eight new members onboard, the 2025–2026 Board brings fresh energy and a strong commitment to strengthening alumni engagement. The Planning Day offered a valuable orientation, framed by the Alumni Engagement Strategy, and sparked thoughtful discussions on how the Board can support strategic program goals in the year ahead.
The day opened with welcome remarks from Andrew Shepherd, Counsellor Development Corporation at the Australian High Commission in Suva, followed by a Talanoa session that encouraged open dialogue between Board members and DFAT. Alumni shared reintegration challenges—particularly around employment—and appreciated DFAT’s willingness to listen and engage.
Facilitated sessions helped clarify expectations, review the Board’s Terms of Reference, and formalise commitments through a signed code of conduct. Small group activities encouraged reflection on the Board’s identity and purpose and explored ways to make alumni engagement more inclusive and impactful.
A highlight of the day was the creation of a “Commitment Wall,” where each member shared a personal goal for the year. The atmosphere was energized and collaborative, setting a strong foundation and purpose for the Board’s work ahead.
The day wrapped up with team-building activities that reinforced connections and fostered a spirit of cooperation. Members left with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision for their role in shaping the future of the Australia Awards Fiji program.
Supported by DFAT and managed by Abt Global, the Alumni Advisory Board is poised to make a meaningful contribution to alumni engagement and national development in Fiji.
